Ape Cave Adventure

While Mary and her kids are in town with us for nearly a month, we are trying to come up with some new adventures to try out. Today it was going to be a trip up to Johnston Ridge Observatory, but the weather didn't seem like it would be clear enough to see the crater, so we changed our plans last night to go to the Ape Caves and explore instead. That ideal included a last minute track down of a baby backpack, but Jenna came through at 10:00 for me! We stopped at Yale Lake to use the bathroom and eat our picnic lunch. The lake is beautiful and we decided we would have to come back sometime to picnic & play in the lake.
Here we are enjoying our picnic lunch, It was in the shade and a little cool.

Anna & Michael posing by the lake.
Once we got the the caves I realized I had forgotten to get the lantern out of my moms house. Luckily I had brought little flashlights for all the kids and one big one, but lighting was a little dim and that made for a little bit of a treacherous walk until we remembered I had an app for a flashlight. Once we got that going it made the walking easier, at least for me! It took us longer than the 1 hour it said it would take to get there and back.  Both Anna & Michael fell, but it was mostly drama, no blood. But other than 2 tired 4 year olds we did really good. It was fun to walk in to the dark, cold cave.
Are we brave enough to go down?

Here we go, can we turn back now?

Michael was the only kid willing to go crouch down in the little cave for a photo.

Margaret slept for the majority of the ride in, guess it didn't thrill her much!
